Smart homes. The latest technology craze to sweep the nation. Smart homes have become more than just a futuristic concept—they are a tangible reality. In this article, we will explore the dynamic world of smart homes, where cutting-edge technology seamlessly integrates with our daily lives to enhance convenience, comfort, and efficiency.

From voice-activated assistants to intelligent security systems, we’ll dive deep into the innovations and trends that are propelling smart homes into the future.

What are smart homes?

For those of you who are technophobes or may have been living under a rock, smart homes are ‘a dwelling equipped with systems and appliances that can be operated remotely using a computer or mobile phone’. These systems can be anything from a voice activated speaker system – think Amazon’s Alexa – to mobile activated light bulbs and heating systems. Smart homes have a central hub, such as a smart speaker, control panel, or app that’s linked to devices that you want to control.

Smart homes have been gaining popularity in the last few years, with around 2.2 million smart homes in the UK according to The Eco Experts.

Why do people want smart homes?

I guess the real question is why wouldn’t you want a smart home? They are convenient, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly. They save you time and effort in daily tasks and allow you to monitor your home when you aren’t in it – perfect for convenience and security.

Energy efficient

According to the Connected Devices Alliance, upgrading your home appliances to smart technologies can reduce your energy usage by 30%, saving you around £450 a year! This is due to the technologies in devices such as smart thermostats and smart light bulbs, that only turn on when necessary – rather than because you forgot to turn them off (don’t worry – we’re all guilty!)

Boost resale value

As well as saving energy (and money), you can make more money when it’s time to sell up too! A survey completed by John Burns Real Estate shared that 65% of home buyers would pay more for a smart home.

Convenient for busy people

Being able to turn your lights, heating and devices on through your phone is no longer a dream of the future, but the convenience brought by these devices can actually save you 30 minutes a day! Think of all the other things you could be doing – or not doing – in these extra 30 minutes!

Helpful for less mobile people

And it’s not just the busy people that benefit from smart devices! The lives of elderly or disabled people can be made much easier by being able to turn their devices on and off, and to see who is at their door, without having to move. This, in turn, makes their living situation safer, because they don’t need to worry as much about falls.

They improve your security

Devices such as video doorbells and mobile activated security cameras are reducing the likelihood of your home getting targeted by criminals. In a survey by the Co Op, 89% of burglars said a smart home would put them off targeting a property.
